Worthy Winner

11 Feb 2004

Glastonbury Festival's head honcho Michael Eavis has been declared a local hero by the people of Somerset in a BBC poll.

The nominations were adjudicated by journalists and historians from the county. Their task was to look for the iconic figure of Somerset, be they a showbiz star, an historical figure, a musician, a sports personality, or simply a well-respected, inspirational individual.

The nominations list included such stiff competition as
Joe Strummer, Bill Bailey, Ian Botham, Sir Ranulf Fiennes, T.S. Eliot, Acker Bilk, Jill Dando, John Cleese, Terry Pratchett, Adge Cutler, Jane Austen and even King Arthur.

Outstripping them all, Michael Eavis was declared Somerset's worthy winner in the poll, which is part of a nationwide search for local heroes.
