Michael visits Kenya with Oxfam
12 Nov 2003
As Oxfam launches a new fundraising campaign to help the worlds poorest people, Michael Eavis travelled to Kenya to see the money raised by Glastonbury Festival over recent years is changing lives. Tina Rowe and Steve Roberts of the Western Daily Press were with him and have kindly given permission for the articles covering the visit to be posted on this website. Click here to see this.
OXFAM PROJECT VISIT FOR GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL ORGANISER
Since 1994 Oxfam has provided stewards at Glastonbury Festival and in return the Festival has paid Oxfam and its volunteers for their time. With the gradual increase in both the size of the event, and the complexity of security, the number of stewards Oxfam recruits now totals over 800 per year. In return, following each event, the Festival gives £120,000 to Oxfam, to support their work in helping people in the poorest countries in the world lift themselves out of poverty.
This year the Festival donated to Oxfam an additional £200,000 in recognition of its ten year relationship.
Oxfam has been working in Kenya since 1964. During the early 1990s it gave emergency assistance to thousands of people affected by a long drought in the north of the country. Oxfam is now working to ensure that people can support themselves in years to come.
Between November 16th and 22nd Michael Eavis will visit a number of development projects. The visit will include seeing how the construction of reservoirs is
providing life-saving water for nomadic tribes throughout the dry season. He will also visit the Kibera slum to understand how increased education opportunities are helping people to break the cycle of poverty - and will look at how a mobile health service is contributing to health education.
As Michael explained, “Without the stewarding Oxfam provides the Festival would never run as smoothly. It is great to be able to give something back to Oxfam and a privilege to go to Kenya to see how the money is used to help make a difference. I love the Festival - but being able to contribute to Oxfam’s aim of alleviating poverty makes it even more worthwhile.”
