Mendip District Council say Glastonbury 2003 Was Very Successful
28 Aug 2003Glastonbury 2003 was a success - it is official!
A meeting of Mendip District Council Regulatory Board convened on Monday 18th August to consider a detailed report, which formally appraised the Council as licensing authority of Glastonbury Festival 2003. Included with the report from council officers were submissions from the Environment Agency, Shepton Mallet Hospital, Somerset Fire Brigade and Avon & Somerset Constabulary.
Glenn Crocker, the General Manager of Health and Facilities in Mendip, presented the report. In summary he said:
- The event was very successful.
- The milestone conditions were all satisfactory met by the set deadlines.
- There were no significant breaches of licence conditions.
- Mendip District Council monitoring of the event was the most comprehensive and thorough ever.
- The Festival was thought to be the safest and best ever.
- The negative impact on local communities was significantly reduced.
- The multi-agency partnership working should be seen as an exemplar for other major events.
- Many aspects of the event suggest the site had been at, or very close to capacity.
In conclusion, Mr Crocker said that a festival of this size and complexity can always be improved and this is no exception. Festival management had responded very positively to suggestions previously made and had been hugely innovative of its own volition. The baseline standards established in 2002 had been surpassed and the achievements of 2003 should be built upon for any future events.
The Regulatory Board considered, discussed and accepted the report of the 2003 Festival as compiled by the council officers.
The license application for the 2004 festival will be discussed at a meeting of the regulatory board at Mendip District Council, Shepton Mallet. More information is available on their website at www.mendip.gov.uk. At the present time the date of Weds 26th November is subject to confirmation for the next meeting, after which more details will be available. As previously there will be live internet reporting of the decision when it is taken, watch this website for further information.
