Keeping Pilton Peaceful
09 Jun 2003Philip Appleton has a mission: to keep the peace in Pilton and surrounding villages. And he has the steely look of a man who is determined to succeed. The former Police Inspector has been appointed by the festival to the new role of Villages Liaison Manager as part of a concerted drive to provide better security for residents.
And he’s no stranger to dealing with troublemakers. He was a Bronze Commander with Avon and Somerset Police and dealt with a number of public order incidents including serious disturbances in the Southmead and Knowle West areas of Bristol. He is experienced in working closely with residents and policing community situations.
Phil will provide a single point of contact for villagers’ concerns and queries and has already written to all residents outlining the action he is taking. In short, it’s a zero tolerance of trouble. "I firmly believe that maintaining the quality of life for the residents of surrounding villages should be a priority and I intend to make it my priority. Anti social behaviour and trespassing will be dealt with swiftly and firmly,” he said.
There has been a 100 per cent increase in security personnel in Pilton and the surrounding area. Pilton village itself will have 24 hour security foot patrols and a mobile response unit. They will be in addition to the static security/stewards and to the police. There will also be 10 CCTV cameras linked to the security control room and the police.
Phil said: “The village shop will not be selling alcohol and the pub will be closed. The message to all those attending the festival is to follow the directions and signs to the entrances and respect the locality and keep out of the village area.”
Inside the site, festival-goers are being urged to take some sensible steps to thwart anyone intent on committing crime.
· A free lock-up service is open 24 hours a day.
· UV pens are available at Information Points and with Stewards for marking of property.
· CCTV is in operation on and off site.
· Extra lighting has been installed in thoroughfares and car parks.
· Form a neighbourhood watch with your camping neighbours so you can watch out for each other.
· Lock and empty your vehicle and display the “Thieves Don’t Bother” notice on the windscreen.
