Glastonbury Unsigned Performers Competition 2005
21 Sep 2004You’re musical, you’re brilliant, you’re not signed (yet) and you’re up for playing one of the biggest stages in the world.
Check on all counts? Then read on…
Following the huge success of the 2004 inaugural Unsigned Performers Competition, Glastonbury Festival offers further opportunities for new bands and artists to grace the hallowed fields of Worthy Farm in 2005 – subject of course to Mendip District Council granting the Festival a Public Entertainment Licence!
In 2004 the five winners played on the five different Festival main stages. Because of the competition’s active endorsement of entrants to stage programmers, almost every music venue at the Festival featured at least one competition entrant in its line-up - with a total of some thirty playing at the Festival in 2004. The Competition Finals generated national press and television coverage, a compilation CD was released featuring 24 of the top competition acts and the Festival’s onsite station, Radio Avalon, dedicated an hour a day of its programming to artistes that had entered the competition.
Several competition finalists signed record deals, including New Tent (now John Peel Stage) winners BlackBud (now with Independiente), Acoustic Stage winners Bodixa (now with Complete Music) and their fellow finalists Ralfe Band (just signed to Skint Records). Three competition finalists (BlackBud, The Subways and Death Before Dishonour) played the famous Pilton Party in September.
Since taking last year’s overall winners’ title, The Subways have:
• Played to a cheering crowd of thousands on the Other Stage.
• Been Steve Lamacq’s New Favourite Band on his BBC 6 Music show, and now feature on the station’s play list.
• Earned support slots for The Von Bondies, The 5678s and Stellastarr*.
• Played slots at Reading and Leeds Festivals and Jersey Live.
• Featured in “five best new bands” lists in both the Glastonbury preview and Reading review copies of NME.
• Recorded a live session and interview for Zane Lowe on Radio One.
• Recorded a live session with XFM.
• Sold out of pre-order copies of their first single three weeks before its release.
If you want to get an idea of the quality of last year’s finalists, 22 are featured on the 24-track charity compilation cd available from Concrete Recordings.
