Glastonbury Unsigned CD "Most Ethically Sound"
14 Jul 2004
A compilation two CD set featuring 24 finalists from the inaugural year of the ‘Glastonbury Unsigned Bands’ competition was released on the opening day of the 2004 Festival.
The CD has been released by new Manchester based independent label Concrete Recordings and will be on sale from 23/6/04 at the sales pitch in the Festival market area provided by the Festival organisers. The double album will be £5 with profits split 50/50 between the Fairtrade Foundation charity and the bands.
The Festival set up the competition as a way of dealing with the landslide of ‘unsigned applications’ received each year to play the Festival. Over 2500 bands entered the competition. A shortlist of 24 were selected to perform in the competition finals in four different categories at Pilton Working Mens Club in late April/early May. The original intention was to award five festival places: four for the winners of the categories and a fifth place for an overall winner, who will be playing The Other Stage. The quality of the artists was so high that approximately ten places have been found for bands to perform.
The competition finals, covering a wide range of music styles, were a perfect scouting ground for Concrete Recordings whose philosophy is: "there are two kinds of music, good and bad." The label were delighted when their idea of releasing the compilation album was enthusiastically met by the Festival staff at the Pilton Finals.
There’s a great deal of excitement in all the camps involved in the project; Glastonbury Festivals, who dreamt up the competition, Concrete Recordings who have organised the release, the Fairtrade Foundation whose name will be met by a new audience and will benefit from 50% of the profits and lastly, the unsigned bands who will receive priceless exposure and the remaining 50% of the profits.
The Glastonbury Unsigned band CD has been hailed by the NME as "the most ethically sound [CD] ever" and tracks from it have been played on Radio 1 by John Peel. Copies of the album are available to buy online from www.concreterecordings.co.uk.
The Rosinators were inadvertantly left off the CD, to the regret of the Festival. Please see their website www.rosinators.com for more information on the band.
The Rosinators are "rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the UK's finest bands. If you've not heard their music then you're really missing something great," says Dee Hallett of British Bluegrass News
