For Russia With Love
16 Jun 2003Glastonbury Festival is doing its bit to bolster relations between the UK and Russia – and help spread the word globally about the quality of British music.
The British Council is bringing a group of 20 overseas promoters, producers and DJs to the festival as part of its music department’s work in promoting British music of all kinds to the far corners of the globe.
Among the group are three Russians who will be filmed at the festival by a crew from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office who are producing a documentary for broadcast on Russian TV about relations between Russia and the UK.
The finished film will also be re-edited to form the basis of an educational video for English language students in Russian schools, colleges and universities.
The film’s senior producer, Margaret Ousby of the FCO said: “The British Council is doing so much really cool work to help build relationships and promote British music – and where better to do that than at Glastonbury.
“We’re hoping some of the bands will be booked to play in other parts of the world as a direct result of the visit.”
One of the Russians, Anton Yntsen is a DJ and club promoter who has his own record company called Morze Records. He comes from Izhevsk in Siberia, which as well as being the birthplace of Tchaikovsky and Kalashnikov (sadly) is also a very fun and happening place with a booming interest in music.
Lisa Mault, who is organising the whole project for the British Council, said Glastonbury was chosen because it has the most diverse mix of music genres in the country.
“Some of the visitors have been to the festival before and for others it will be a whole new experience. They are all looking forward to it immensely.”
Global Glastonbury indeed!
