Festival Crime Stays Low

25 Jun 2004

It seems even criminals are taking a break at this year’s festival as crime levels stay at an unprecedented low.

As the first bands kicked off the festival on Friday morning, police confirmed they had made just 47 arrests – almost half of those for minor drug offences – and only had 57 crimes reported.

Glastonbury officials were also pleased that England’s defeat to Portugal in last night’s Euro 2004 quarter final did not result in any violent incidents on site.

“So far it is all very positive,” said police Sergeant Bridget Maddaloni. “There were 66,000 festival-goers watching the England game yesterday and at the end of the match everybody dispersed quietly. There was no trouble.”

The once-familiar sight of gatecrashers jumping over festival fences also seems no more than a distant memory, with security teams reporting just two attempts to scale the festival’s £1 million perimeter wall.
