2001 - the fence and the jumpers

WHAT JUMPING THE FENCE HAS DONE FOR US
A Prototype New Fence THE FACTS

Unless you are as ill informed as George W.Bush then you will be aware that an outbreak of fence jumping at last years Glastonbury festival lead to the cancellation of this year's event and has jeopardised the festivals future. Let us make no odds about this, those people who jumped the fence last year were directly responsible for Glastonbury 2001 being held in cyberspace only.

THE CHARITIES
Apart from the obvious i.e. no Glastonbury festival at Pilton this year the fence jumpers have deprived both the festivals' charities and the local economy of a large revenue stream. You may not be aware of this but Glastonbury festival donations last year enabled Oxfam to help save the lives of over 200,000 people struck by natural disaster in both Guterate and El Salvador.
The donation made to Water Aid by the festival was enough to pay for rudimentary sanitation and clean water facilities in a community of six thousand in Ghana. Greenpeace say that not only is Glastonbury Festival their biggest donor it is their single biggest source of recruitment. As well as the three big charities the festival also donates monies to small projects in the Somerset area.
So not only has fence jumping prevented this year's festival from going ahead in the traditional sense, it has deprived charities of much needed finance. These charities provide disaster relief, make clean water available and campaign for a better future. Those people who jumped the fence last year have taken clean water, medical aid and shelter away from some of the most needy people on the planet.

THE FUTURE
In order for the festival to be granted a licence for 2002 changes have to be made. A new fence will be erected and security checks are going to be a lot tougher not only at the fence and gates but on the busses and trains, in the car parks and the whole of the area surrounding the site. The message is quite simple, if you don't have a ticket you won't be coming in after all you wouldn't take food and clean water from an earthquake victim, would you?
