Jamie Cullum - Exclusive Interview

07 Jun 2004

Jazz singer and pianist Jamie Cullum has come along way in little under a year. His album Twentysomething, an intriguing mix of strong original savvy jazz-pop, and loose-limbed takes on everything from Fly Me To The Moon to The Wind Cries Mary, has now done the seemingly impossible for a ‘jazz’ oriented record and sold over a million copies worldwide.

The Brit musician’s bete noir, the American market, also looks set to fall under the spell of Cullum’s one-man charm offensive as he storms both MTV and the David Letterman Show, in a feat of almost impossibly broad demographic reach; mums love him, dads admire him, guys want to emulate him and the girls, well, they just want him.

Jamie’s appeal and charisma might be onerous were they not so real and genuine, as much to the disappointment of his critics, he can run rings around most of your average performers on the pop, rock or jazz scene, with a stage presence that is instantly infectious. So how does the jazz tyke take all this attention and success in his stride? It’s a good question but he seems now more than ever to be revealing a very mature head on his young shoulders.

Mike Flynn, equipped with mic and video camera, met the young piano-bashing jazz superstar on his recent UK tour backstage at the Brighton Dome and asked him a few pertinent questions about the Neptunes, touring, The Brits and loads more. This is just the start of Jamie’s career – catch him live on the Jazz World stage and find out what all the fuss is about – he might even play his guitar if you’re lucky!
