Great Year For Greenpeace At Glastonbury

from Green - 29 Jun 2003

Greenpeace continues to win support from bands and artists performing at Glastonbury, not to mention the gigantic crowds.

The global environmental campaign organisation has been promoting three major campaigns:

  • Stop Esso
  • GM Foods
  • Save Or Delete

The Thrills, Athlete, Beth Orton, Goldfrapp, Sparta, Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, Bez and The Sugababes have all signed a petition to ask Tony Blair to ban the imports of illegally logged timber entering the UK.

Brenda Ramsey from the Save Or Delete forest campaign said "80% of the world's ancient forests have been destroyed and the situation in Indonesia is so urgent that the orangutan will be extinct in the wild in 10 years time. Support from musicians helps us take these issues to a wide new audience."

The GM Campaign has been making people aware of the government's intention to grow GM crops. Nearly two and a half thousand people have voted to keep GM out of their food and only 22 people have voted for GM ingredients. "Glastonbury has spoken - the big question is will Blair listen?"

Greenpeace have been distributing mad cow frisbees and the Esso Sucks t-shirts have been more popular than ever. Glastonbury shows that the environment continues to be a very important issue for festival goers.
