Colour Me Glastonbury

17 Jun 2003

It’s a glorious June morning. Michael Eavis and I are taking a tour of the festival site in his LandRover Defender and the air is thick with expectation and excitement.
Things are really happening in earnest now as the countdown to the big event quickens.
And all around us, the colours of the festival are bursting out as an army of workers and volunteers toil together to bring reality to the dream.
Down by the Pyramid Stage vast generators and other power equipment are offloaded from lorries and hauled into position. Telephone engineers, electricians and water workers are bringing vital services to life. Everyone has a job to do. Everything has its place.
And everywhere we go, Michael gets a wave and a cheery hello from the people who are making things happen.
But it’s the colours that really strike the eye. Uniquely Glastonbury – yellows, reds, blues, greens. The wonderful waste bins created by Hank and his team of artists. The flags fluttering from their famous poles. Ed the carpenter, chiselling out his wondrous creations.
It’s happening. And it’s amazing.
