A Good Start...
27 Jun 2003'No Drama'
This year's festival is off with a bang as the multitudes descend early and flood the camping grounds in record time. Wednesday evening sees numbers reminiscent of previous years' Thursday night crowds, leaving most in an optimistic mood as they contemplate spending the next few days getting up to all sorts of mischief, the naughty scamps.
Thursday night sees an enthusiastic herd of cattle milling around in front of the Radio 1 stage to the fantastic Sancho Panza set while Colin Murray and Edith Bowman stagger around on stage. Irish bloke does a pretty good stage dive, I must admit, but his strip to Nelly's Hot In Herre ending at the boxer shorts was strangely anticlimactic. Very disappointed in you, fella, bottling out at the last minute, ya big jesse.
But we can at least count on love to make a regular appearance, as Steven Herrel, 20, from South Shields found out when he unwittingly brought his best friend together with a girl from Nottingham when he stepped on her face at the stone circle.
"I felt the crunch and heard her scream but by the time I could turn round my mate had bent down to see if she was alright. They've been together all night now and I'm feeling a bit of a Billy No-Mates" he huffs. "Although," he adds with a grin, "he'll not be too happy when he sobers up and finds himself shackled to some minger with a boot-print in the side of her head!"
Stalker can be found wandering the stones, haggling with distressed punters over the sale price of cans of warm Stella...
