Four to the Tor

28 Jun 2003

Plans made at Glastonbury never get followed, usually because you end up having a much better, and certainly more varied time, trying to follow them; today was no exception.

I’d planned to meet with Nic Fanciulli before his appearance on the Energy 24 stage in the market area of the festival. Nic is currently enjoying the status of much-in-demand DJ, having played the Radio One stage yesterday evening.

I arrived to find three Mixmag staff, Nick, Ed and Max, along with three other fast-rising stars of house, all waiting for Nic to arrive. These future DJs were Louis Edwards, resident DJ at Cream, Lee McGuffie, AKA DJ Guffy, part of Andy Farley’s Nukleuz DJ booking agency and current resident at Frantic, as well as Bristol-based hard-house DJ A-Star. Full respect is due here as they had all camped on site. Absent Nic however had enjoyed the luxury of an overnight stay in a local hotel. “If it’s offered, you’ve got to take it” he later claimed.

It transpired that the reason for this gathering was that Mixmag are sponsoring future DJs at the Energy 24 stage this year. They also plan to publish an article by each of the four detailing their experiences of both Glastonbury and Creamfields, events at which all four are playing.

We wandered up to the Green Fields for Ed and Max to take some photos, where I caught up with Nic. He’d really enjoyed playing the Radio One stage last night, but sadly finished his set five minutes before they went out live to the nation.

Things are looking up for his record label, Portent. With 10 releases to date and two new singles for the summer, including a UK release for E-Smoove’s The Guitar, things couldn’t be better.

As for the rest of his day, Nic planned to head over and see Jon Carter at the Dance Tent with friends Emma and Justin, then “it’s not my kind of thing, but you’ve got to see Radiohead” before heading back to the luxury of the hotel. ”It’s my mum’s birthday tomorrow” offered Nic, almost by way of apology, “so I can’t stay around.” Shame.

You can catch A-Star, Guffy, Louis and Nic on the Energy 24 stage tonight, as well as at Creamfields in Liverpool on August Bank Holiday weekend.
