OneWorld Stage

An Evening at Worthy Farm

29 Jun 2003

After feasting on Glastonbury staples, chilli and rice, washed down with a full-bodied bottle of squashed grapes, it was time to hit the One World stage to see Beth Orton. As always, she wooed the punters with her powerful yet wonderfully controlled vocals set atop a backing of strings, drums and keyboard. The sheer brilliance of “Central Reservation” has to be seen to be believed.

Off then to get in some beers before seeing, at the same stage, the Skatalites peddle their wares of all things Jamaican and Ska. The immortal “Guns of Navarone” had young and old alike skanking till the cows came home. Once joined by Mr Tanimo for his classic “Im In The Mood For Ska”, the line-up was complete. This was a rare chance to see the original rocksteady and dancehall masters at work, nostalgia and smiles in abundance.

Wrenching the gearbox just one cog higher, a slosh more drink, and it’s onwards to see Primal Scream headline the Other stage. Thankfully, they haven’t lost one iota of their previous chemistry and strongly deliver the goods as if amphetamines don’t cause psychoses. The guitars still sound like a herd of stampeding elephants and the percussion is meatier than Spam.

With Bobby’s hectic stage presence to boot, it’s clear that Primal Scream are as much a rock and roll band as ever before. As well as crowd pleasers “Rocks”, and “Loaded” more recent fruits of Gillespie’s song writing career were played. Some of the better tunes from the Xterminator such as “Swastika Eyes” were gratefully received by the seething masses. Good night? Good night.
