Mystic Swing

27 Jun 2003

The festival proper may not have started yet but already the punters are rolling up for the finest illusory experience £1.50 can buy.

I will admit to a modicum of apprehension as I step aboard the Mystic Swing; a two minute mind melting journey into disorientation. “Don’t worry,” beams Seb Bambini the proprietor, “no one’s ever been sick.” As we climb in and our tiny U-V hutch begins to rock I find myself doubting the veracity of Seb’s statement. You just can’t trust Carnies these days.

I am not giving too much away by saying that the trick is in the way the inner seat carriage sways one way whilst the outer walls and ceiling spin through 360 degrees first one way and then the other. Possession of this knowledge does in no way allow you to convince your brain that at times you are utterly defying gravity, remaining in your seat whilst looking down from the ceiling.

It is a frankly incredible sensation, though not one for sufferers of motion sickness. As I disembark and another swing load of nervous looking customers gee each other into having a go, I notice the ‘for sale’ sign. I can hardly believe my eyes.
