Beer, Sun and Supermodels

29 Jun 2003

One of the great joys of Glastonbury Festival - above nearly any other festival - is being able to sit in a quiet corner of a field relaxing with ones mates completely ignoring musicians, poets, comedians, jugglers, mime artists and other assorted entertainers.

It's a proactive thing, this avoidance technique - the corner has to be quiet, calm and must have an area filled with beer or something like it and one must be able to do nothing whatsoever except drink and relax - as ostentatiously as possible.

I've snuck backstage at the Acoustic Tent for exactly this reason - friends are working there and they like a beer or three, as do I. You have to at festivals. It's the perfect opportunity in an otherwise conventional life.

In one of those weird Glastonbury 'everyone's-the-same-underneath-the-skin' moments, who should be doing exactly the same a few seats away but Kate Moss and her posse. Admittedly, she's got the ostentation side of things rather wrapped up, since half the eyes in the field seem to be on her and her rather lovely friends, not to mention the fact that they all have their own personal Landrover transport (it's the Glastonbury taxi, doncha know).

Beer, sunshine and supermodels in the house. Hurray!
