 Susanna Baca
The intoxicating Peruvian sounds were just the tonic for this afternoon's chillout session, Susanna Baca supplying instant smiles to the crowd. Mixing sophisticated Brazilian song structures with flourishes of jazz harmony, as well as Cuban son and salsa Baca's voice is a constant source of wonder, a rich ebony flavour that is also molasses sweet.

With avant garde New York guitarist currently in her touring band Baca achieves a contemporary edge as Ribot's leftfield textures pull at the traditional influences. Intimate is Baca's motto and she insists the crowd get as close as possible so she can look in their eyes is just the kind of quiet challenge you would expect from this effervescent songstress.

Delicate flamenco flavoured guitar etches out the delicate rhythmic interplay as each piece builds and swells, Hammond organ flutters add a bluesy touch to these swinging and swaying pieces. Preferring to address the crowd in Spanish Baca explains about the next song - and admitting my ignorance - the meaning is somewhat open to interpretation, however it's obvious that her warmth and love of music is overwhelmingly displayed. A quiet storm of a performance the rain gods were pleased and the sun continued to shine on.
